Films of the Year
We seem to be bang on about music here more than films. Maybe this is a reflection of how influential music is on the film The Kick Inside (which is not a Kate Bush musical). When you work day in and day out on the development of a film, your head is always there and sometimes you need to dip out of it to enjoy life, and inevitably be influenced in your creativity process by this dip out points. Music is a key thing on this blog, as well as random television shows, politics, boxing and whatever randomness pops up in the .gif driven world of Tumblr.
So that brings us on to films. Films of the Year are always hard to come up with. It’s not like albums that you listen to constantly always in a position inside your head that makes it somewhat memorable. Also with the way media works these days, it’s pretty straight forward to watch films that weren’t even released this year, but were glories from yesteryear, or sleepers from 2011 and so forth. So as with our musical tastes, here’s our top 10 films of the year that were watched/discovered this year. They may not be from this year… but they are great films discovered/watched for the first time this year (in no particular order).
1.) Compliance
Chilling and apparently people walked out at the London Film Festival, calling it shit! Some people need to lighten up
2.) Chronicle
Written by John Landis’ son (who comes across as a massive douchebag on Twitter), this low budget sci-fi film brings a live action feeling, influenced massively by comic/anime
3.) Rust & Bone
Just a rather beautiful film.
4.) The Raid
Yes yes yes to proper action coming back properly without being sanitised or CGI’d to fuck.
5.) Looper
Waiting for this for ages and it didn’t disappoint. Stylistic time travelling films… love it.
6.) 21 Jump Street
Surprisingly funny all out comedy with some nice touches. Also watch out for a little Ron Swanson action.
7.) The Cabin in the Woods
Insanity but pure fun.
8.) Beasts of the Southern Wild
This film is emotional. Prepare yourself for that, as I thought it was going to be a Where the Wild Things Are.
9.) The Sound of Noise
Insane with one of my favourite first acts ever. Does trail off a bit in the second, but comes back to some serious awesomeness.
10.) Citizen Kane
Er.. this film is over 70s year old mate, are you a bit slow? Well yes.. but watching it on the big screen was quite a humbling experience for a film maker. The techniques still hold so strong with the story driving the film forward; it was a true testament to how style and story should work together to create the film makers vision. This is to me what cinema is all about.

So to celebrate this festival season, I’ve decided to celebrate through music. Here are a compilation of 50 songs that have come from albums that have dominated my earphones over the last 12 months. Music is the soundtrack to our lives. Yes, I went there with a Sundance award winner waiting to be made (probably in the can already)… but here are 50 songs from almost 50 albums that have been helping to stir the creative juices throughout this year.

As for next year
Well… we’re getting closer to making this dream come true. With the script getting so much tighter and all the business plans in the early stages of being built up… our time is starting to gearing up for 2013 being our year. We keep on saying that every year, and every year something gets done in helping us get there; and now we’re almost there.
So cheers to that.

10 tracks to party to (which may not be the first track that comes to mind when you think of a party song… but you forgot about it and you start shaking your arse like it’s 1999… oh damn I forgot about Prince…)

The first episode out of 3 from HBO’s 24/7 series for the fight between Pacquiao and Marquez. We all know how it ended in the 6th, and with potential talks of a 5th rematch (which I hope doesn’t happen)… this shows the brilliance of boxing, the classic rivalry and going back to how important having heart and soul is to boxing.
